About the event
'Operation Chastise' is more famously known as "The Dams Raid" and is arguably one of the most famous single operations of the Second World War. Audacious in concept and execution, high risk, almost technically abstract and demanding the highest levels of airmanship and flying skill, the crews were all handpicked for very obvious reasons.
Of 19 Lancaster Avro Bomber aircraft, just 11 made it home, and 53 aircrew were lost, with 3 taken POW. However, the raid made headlines around the world when the tide of war had not yet turned in the Allies favour.
Thirteen Australians flew on the raid in various capacities. Two died on the raid. Three of the raiders were South Australians and although they each survived the Dams mission and were decorated for their efforts, only one survived the War.
Join us to hear Sandra Lee’s presentation on the three South Australian Dambusters and their role in Operation Chastise. Author/journalist Sandra Lee is currently writing the autobiography of the late Squadron Leader David Shannon DSO*, DFC*. Some of the relatives of the three South Australian Dambusters, will be taking part in official commemoration in Adelaide to mark the 80th Anniversary and will be attending our lunch.
